Autonomous Toddler - Far Less Check Toddler, Less Watch Toddler, Longer Buff Cooldowns

This mod is to help significantly reduce all that overzealous checking of toddlers from all other sims in the house teen and upwards. Man oh man, Maxis never get this right. Sure isn't that why they almost never gave us toddlers at all for TS4? Because they have yet to fine craft a toddler minding mechanism, where sims are not autonomously and constantly tripping over themselves to endlessly tend to toddlers. Even when they do not have to.

Sick of sims dragging our toddlers to the potty? Even if the toddler is fully potty-trained and is highly capable of tending to it themselves? Even if the bladder is only a single degree less than being 100% fine? Some poor, grown-up sim is given the auto push to hound our toddlers because Maxis have not changed the formula since TS2. I knew it was not going to be any different for TS4 once toddlers were announced. I knew teens, adults and elders would, once again, be a bigger pain in the butt regarding toddlers, than the toddlers themselves.

This mod helps alleviate that. Especially with those fully skilled toddlers that are great at minding themselves for most motives and needs. Especially if you've set up the home for them to easily do so. Then grown-ups, just back-the-frick-off and let the little ones be.

Grown-ups will still autonomously train and teach toddlers with nice, helpful stuff that you're happy to see them attempt. Or just talk to the wee ones for a bit of interactive social fun. But won't hound them over motives because the game pushes them to "Check" every blasted few minutes. That overbearing crap can gladly go away. And this mod helps make it so.

So it's not a miracle mod that will end toddler checking completely. (Hence renaming mod as it was my own silly fault for boasting "No Auto Check Toddler." Even though this is pretty much what I experience in my own game.) It is so engrained into the numerous toddler interaction files for sims to do it that it would be impossible to fully prevent, short of turning toddlers into mannequins. (Or giving you my Save Game and Mods folder to see it for yourself as I do.) Hence there will not be one mod out there that will switch it off entirely - short of turning toddlers into mannequins. Not one mod out there. So I'll just rename the mod so you know what you're getting. But if you follow what I say here with skilled parents and skilled toddlers, you will experience what I experience, and that is a very significant reduction in toddler checking. I don't actually see it much at all, usually never. But if you are still seeing it without a drop in frequency while using these mods, I dunno, not much use telling me about it as I don't experience it. If it's not due to conflicting mods then it's purely down to style of play. Either way, not much use telling me about it. I can only be concerned with broken mods, not style of play. My sim homes are always designed with plenty for sims to do. But if you're the kind that prefers cosy little barebones, shotgun starter homes with newbie, unskilled sims and only a TV, Stereo and a Toddler for entertainment. Well guess what happens when the TV is off...:57b447a70b144_3(1): An autonomous woohoo mod might help in the short term, for something else to do, but in the long term just more toddlers in your little home!!! :slapnut:But seriously, I don't experience it with these mods, so I don't know what to tell you if you do.

New Additions - August 2018

Four new additions to compliment the mod here for less toddler and child annoyances. I did not want to start a new thread for all of these, just best to keep them all in the thread that's relevant. I've been using these in my own game for a very long time, to further balance the toddler and child annoyances. I truly hope you can find the same degree of sanity in your game as I do in mine with all these mods combined. So, the four new ones are -

1 - Less Auto Watch Toddler - The truth to spotting the devious Maxis trick is knowing the difference between Check Toddler and Watch Toddler. Unless you're keeping a very keen eye on the interaction queue, it all looks the same in terms of the sim animations in game. Hence so many say the No Auto Check Toddler mod does not work. I don't blame the lesser observant players who just want to play the game without all the overbearing bullshit nonsense. Just Maxis, for doubling up on different annoying shit that has the same frikking animations it's hard to tell the difference. So, then, this mod too, to compliment the No Auto Check Toddler and lessen the overzealous, overbearing "Watch" shit that Maxis invariably seem to think we enjoy in our games every three minutes. Where and what the fuck planet do they come from?

2 - Longer Watched Toddler Buff Time - To compliment the above. Less watch toddler AND longer buff cooldowns in between watching. No need to get out your calculators as the maths is good. E=MC-Stay-the-frik-away-from-toddlers-squared. Special Toddler Relativity right here, folks. Six whole hours, back-the-MCSquared-off. But remember, if you go into a different room they may age quicker than you quite dramatically while you stand still. (Like sims standing still in time is fucking new to the game, what?)

3 - No Auto Watch Child Play With Toy (And Quicker Watching.)

Sims no longer autonomously watch children playing with toys. They're not missing much anyway, FFS. Why do it at all? So, the biggest complaint of TS4 is sims standing around catatonic-like. And Maxis give us interactions where sims are engaged in... standing around catatonic-like. Fuck me, I thought my maths was bad on the previous mod's description. Explain this stroke of Maxis genius to me, if you dare. Well, I've added extra genius that if you somehow desire to command your sim to watch a child play with a toy, because the child's room is a better place to stand catatonic than in the hallway they were just standing catatonic in, then they will stand catatonic watching for much less time than Maxis wants them to stand catatonic. Are we understanding this game yet???

4 - No Auto Make A Mess

Yes, this mod exists out there already, but none that shorten the time a kid or toddler takes to make that god-awful mess. So not only will they not do it autonomously, but if you're so bored you feel the need to command a child/toddler to do it, then they'll take far less time doing it and you don't actually feel yourself ageing before they finally stop.

Personal News 14th July 2018 - I still see comments on other websites referring to what can only be this mod, saying it does not work. Especially lately with a new mod posted on MTS with exactly the same name as this mod. They turn to that MTS mod in the hope it will do more than this mod. Where do I begin? Firstly, it would be good for the player to recognise the subtle differences in game between "check" toddler and "watch" toddler, where the interactions are very different, but the animations often the same. Typical Maxis, fifty different interactions that all lead to the same animations, just to pad out the game. If you're just going by what you see on screen alone (Not checking the interaction queue to spot the difference) then you will probably come to the conclusion this mod does not work. I have an add-on mod for this, that's been in testing in my game since before C&D released, that perhaps it's time I should also release. It deals with "watch" toddler specifically, but compliments this one rather well, and with both mods in play, may finally end the confusion for players. Turning to the MTS mod in hope, will be in vain. Given the XML used and the single amendment made to that XML, the mod will not effect toddler checking autonomy in any way, shape or form. The XML used is already, by Maxis default, set to No Autonomy. Simply because it is a main interaction XML, that does not cause the check interactions themselves. They are sub interactions which that main XML facilitates, that's all it does. A modder would have to address the sub interactions to make them stop, as seen in the mod here. The only change the MTS mod makes is to switch the "Allow User Directed" command from true to false. The end result of that in game would be to disallow the player from commanding an adult sim to check the toddler sim. Simply by hiding the pie menu option when clicking on the toddler. It will not effect the autonomy coding in any way, shape or form, and that will continue as normal as it has not been changed in any way, shape or form. Sorry to dash your hopes if they were on that mod as being your saviour, but that is the truth of it. I will upload the Less Watch Toddler mod here shortly, and maybe some measure of hope can be restored.

Another late night for you, I see. I hope you have make time to relax and play your games. :hug2-smiley:

I am very glad to read your post above. I check MTS regularly, and of course, I saw that mod you mention. Now, there may be many people who are code-savvy, and can modify the game, but most times, it pays off to rely on the ones you trust best. Learning curves can be painful.

Your explanation above is very clear and easy to follow, and for that, I am thankful. Many a time the language and culture barrier does not let me fully grasp other comments or descriptions. My loss, hehee.

Anyways, yes. I would be highly appreciative if you could share your Less Watch Toddler add on.

:thanks-smiley-emoticon-1:

Update August/September 2018

4 new mods added to this one here, that when used together can heavily reduce the amount of pointless toddler and child "Checking" and "Watching" that goes on. It's easy to mis the difference between the check and watch toddler interaction. Because they both have the same animation of the carer sim pushed into doing it just standing there, catatonic for the duration, with maybe the odd hand clap to show they're not completely brain dead.

I've had this little set in my game for a very long time, so hopefully you can enjoy the massive reduction in the silliness as I do. It will still happen occasionally, as I've left some of the more logical and appropriate pushes to do it intact. Just the pointless, "just for the heck of it" pushes have been tamed.

Thank you!

Will this help with the child watching the baby and blocking the path of a parent?  I had a child stand in front of a bassinet for so long the social worker came.

  • Author

I don't think it will. That's more a specific thing related to the bassinet/baby XMLs. I suppose the easiest thing to do would be to ban a child from doing it, but then I'm sure an adult would just take their place and cause same blockage. Then an outright no auto watch baby mod to disallow it completely, if it's just simple watching they are doing. I would not want to stop it if the sim did actually tend to an important baby function first, before standing as a catatonic blockage thereafter. I just don't have babies in my game that often to notice these things - almost never.

Yeah, it's not adults normally.  If a baby cries, a child will go up to watch it/talk to it.  I play a lot of challenges where you only have one controllable sim, so it is just an annoyance.  I now just ban all children from certain rooms by locking doors.

Love your reading about your mods just as much as your mods.  I stopped playing the game in June.  Hmm, I wonder why? I've just started to go back and update all my broken mods and I just have to say thank you. Thank you for making me know I'm not crazy and for making updating my endless list of mods bearable.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just letting you know that my sims still autonomously check toddlers with this mod. I've tested multiple times and made sure that weren't just watching toddlers.

Personal Update - December

Mod renamed. No coding changes. Please make sure to manually remove older mod as this version will not overwrite older version.

So it's not a miracle mod that will end toddler checking completely. Updated for 1.48

The "No Auto Make Mess" mod needed updating. Well, I say "needed" in the loosest of terms. I was not going to bother updating, seeing as the mod stops autonomy anyway. But professionalism won the day. Maxis have finally, after the years of players complaining that kids and toddlers do it too often, have finally addressed the repeat annoyance, by recalibrating the fun push to half of what it was. Probably in the hopes of kids and toddlers doing it half as much. Though if there isn't much else for kids and toddlers to do on a lot, then such a reduction would have no real bearing. What was that charming little sea shanty by the Sex Pistols decades ago? "Frigging in the rigging 'cause there's fuck all else to do." (Oh, for someone to have modded that into Assassin's Creed Black Flag!) But my point exactly. Though if you want to remove the mod to see just how much less they do it, please report findings here. I'll be keeping the mod in. No autonomous frigging in the rigging from my kids and toddlers ever, that's the devil's messing, finding work for idle hands and whatnot, that's for sure!:slapnut:

Awww, great!! Thank you!

Updated for Game version: 1.63.136.1010

The zip contains the mods from the original post on the first page of this thread. You will notice that the mods have -Test. These are the ones I'm testing after I updated them. I am not 100% sure if the buffs work. Please comment here if they work or break, and if they break, describe what you saw in game.

Also, they do conflict with LittleMsSam's toddler tweaks. Keep that in mind. :)

Do you have any updated Toddler mods per chance?  Preferably something that stops Sims from picking them up constantly.  I've tried stopping it using McTuner but nothing seems to stop it.

Ones I have blocked so far are:

134423,socialSuperInteraction_CarryPickUp

155633,socialSuperInteraction_CarryPickUp_FromSeated

156217,socialSuperInteraction_CarryPickUp_ToBed

157540,socialSuperInteraction_CarryPickUp_ToBed_Energy_Motive_Solve

271032,socialSuperInteraction_CarryPickUp_Infant

318163,socialSuperInteraction_CarryPickUp_Infant_Autonomous

I'm a little worried about "Pickup from seated" and "Pickup Infant Autonomous" I fear it may lead to issues with Baths n such.  See, this is why noobs like me shouldn't be messing with things they don't know lol.  Regardless the Sims are still dropping everything to go pickup a Toddler, only to put it back down again fairly short after 😬

  • Author

Sad news is that it cannot be stopped. Couple years back I went down a modding rabbit hole regarding this very thing. Just imagine, it's a major annoyance to most players, and yet not one, single mod out there for all the years we've had toddlers to curb it it? That can't be right. I know why. I've tried. Every file you've listed and ten times more than that I have extracted and modded to no avail. I mean by the end I was modding to the extreme, to the point I was purposely trying to break the whole toddler picking up shebang it to see if I could even make a dent. Nope.

Sure, I could totally eradicate sims ever picking up toddlers ever again, but that just breaks so many other things, just as you've said, bathing and all sorts.

I came to the conclusion that the worst of it is due to when toddlers are seated, they are allowed to call out to anyone - sometimes frikken everyone  - to come pick them up. I assume this was only meant to be when a toddler is in a highchair unable to get out themselves, yet they do it when sitting anywhere, and it is mighty annoying to see grown up sims walk all the way across the lot to pick them up and put them straight back down. Watching this idiocy knowing the toddler could have climbed in and out of the chair ten times themselves instead of waiting for that nonsense.

Believe me, if it was fixable either me or ten other modders you could name would have ended it by now. Absolutely nobody can. Not even Maxis, given all the reports this annoying stupidity has had. Something in the core files that no amount of xml tuning or scripting can reach.

Edit - For a giggle, you could try stopping toddlers form autonomously sitting. No sitting, no calling out "come get me."

But you'd have to extract all sitting interaction xmls and blacklist toddlers from the autonomy. I'd say that's going from one extreme to the next. But it might work for some. Personally, I prefer them auto sitting because they can grab meals off buffet tables, sit and feed themselves.

Perhaps making a new CC "Pick Up Toddler" trait and giving it to only one adult in the house, and blacklisting pick up toddler interactions to all sims without that trait. It won't stop it, but will go some way to reducing the frequency of it. Heck, now that I think about it, I might give that a try one day. I need closure on that frikken unresolved rabbit hole of toddler modding from a few years back.

Oh believe me, my attack on Toddlers is extensive :P

Others I've removed:

140924,socials_Toddler_AskFor_Attention
140927,socials_Toddler_AskFor_Diaper

156922,Toddler_AskToBePickedUp
157002,waypoint_Toddler_Wander_Wild_TakeOffClothes
157152,si_touching_Toddler_Hit

But I do remember having your Toddler mods awhile back.  It was when you posted a whole folder (I think 1.80 something) and they were 100% better.  They weren't as blocked as I have them now but they were infinitely better than default Toddlers.

  • Author

Ha, you did it again! Reminding of mods I do actually have in my game that I've forgotten about! I am the worst scatty brain ever!

I don't seem to have any of the mods of this thread in my game. Just took a quick look in mods folder and I can't seem to find them. Don't know why I don't. Though the ones of this thread are quite old and will need a check for updating, no doubt. Probably why I'm not currently using them.

But that very mod for reducing the pick up idiocy that I did once put out in a bundle rar  I DO have in my game! And a few other infant ones I may or may not have released. I've put them in a rar for you to look at.

I'm losing control of my modding prowess. I have tried three times today to muck in and get on with updating mods for Death patch, and I swear I'v developed narcolepsy as an aversion to reading xmls, I keep nodding off within 10 minutes of staring at them. Same yesterday, nodding off twice. My mind is rebelling!

Anyway, I don't know if these infant/toddler mods need updating for Death. Though unless Maxis are allowing infants and toddlers to now die, becoming ghosts, then I don't imagine they'll need updating.

Though I suppose the whole "easy toddler experience" will be incomplete without the mods of this thread, too. I'll take a look at them tomorrow and update if needed, then it will be as good as it was a few years back when having all the toddler mods present and correct.
