If you were up to billions I'd hazard a guess that its integer overflow. In a 32bit app like sims3, 2^32 is the max amount of data you can fit in 1 integer. This comes out to roughly 4.2 billion (-2.1ish to +2.1ish). When you exceed this number it starts over at -2.1 billion and counts backward towards 0 again. So if this is the case your original pension was close to 4.2 billion, it just can't show this number due limits in the coding language.
