So apparently my son is sick, with hurting to breathe one of his symptoms- and my ex doesn't think he needs to take him to Dr. "It's just a cold". Irritation rising? I think so!

It's good that your son is getting treatment now. I wish it had been through an easier case of applying logical thinking: if he's already presented symptoms of bronchitis, it is probably the same thing again. Better take care than take chances with the newer crazier flu strains nowadays!
